This involved: acquisition and disposition services; commercial land valuations; managing the environmental remediation of former petroleum marketing locations and the management of 18 cafes inside the former EXPO Design Centers in the Midwest and Southern regions of the United States. Additional responsibilities while with Ariel Investments, included secretary to the board of directors and a director of the Ariel Foundation. Prior to his time at Ariel, Mr. Barclay was special assistant to former Governor James R. Thompson in the State of Illinois, while on loan from AT&T.

Mr. Barclay earned his primary law degree, in Chinese Civil & Commercial Law, from Renmin University of China Law School in Beijing, China; and was among the first Americans to do so.
