Co-founder

Bruce J. Sumlin, M.D.

Bruce J. Sumlin, M.D. has over 25 years of expertise in the health care industry. He is a board-certified ophthalmologist, by the American Board of Ophthalmology, and an accomplished surgeon specializing in cataract, glaucoma, laser vision correction (LASIK/PRK) and diabetic retinopathy procedures. In Jamaica W.I., he obtained full licensure via The Medical Council of Jamaica.

A co-founder of the Bambu Fund LLC, Dr. Sumlin served as chairman and chief medical officer involved in the scientific, technologic, and health care investment strategy for the Fund. Dr. Sumlin established his consulting entities, Lifetime Wellness, LLC and Lifetime Vision, LLC, while assisting with the development of the Bambu Fund and Bambu Wellness.

Dr. Sumlin is a former director of the Eye Care Services department within the Detroit Northwest Region of the Henry Ford Health System. There, he initiated and implemented best practice patterns for Michigan’s second largest integrated health care network. Later Dr. Sumlin became director of the glaucoma service and lead cataract and refractive surgeon at Moore Eye Institute in Philadelphia, Pa. While at Moore Eye, he was also a professor in ophthalmology at Drexel University College of Medicine and Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pa. Currently he is known as the most experienced glaucoma and cataract surgeon in the state of Delaware having performed more than 15,000 surgeries as director of glaucoma, cataract, and refractive surgery at Halpern Ophthalmology Associates in Dover, Del. for eight years.

A graduate of Duke University in Durham, N.C., Bruce earned his medical degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago, Ill. He completed an internship at Howard University Hospital in Washington, DC, as well as an ophthalmology residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Mich. He has advanced fellowship training from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Md. and Washington University in St. Louis, Mo.

Bruce is bilingual in English and Spanish. His professional memberships include the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Medical Association, American Glaucoma Society, and American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. In his free time, Bruce enjoys boating, tennis, biking, football, basketball, traveling, music, and the fine arts.
